FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers! Here’s a compilation of FAQ’s (frequently asked questions) about our vessel, our cruises and the Outer Banks!

How much does a sail cost?
Prices for daytime, sunset and private charter sails differ. Please visit the “Pricing” section of this website.

How long is each sail?
Each sail is approximately 2 hours long. We ask that you board at least 20 minutes before departure. Depending on the weather your tour may be a bit longer or shorter.

Do you accept credit cards and checks?
We do accept credit cards and checks, but cash is greatly appreciated!

Where is the Downeast Rover located?
The Rover docks at the Manteo waterfront on Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. For more information, please visit the “Contact Us” section of this website.

Where does the Downeast Rover sail?
The Rover sails between Roanoke Island and the Outer Banks (Nags Head & Kill Devil Hills) in the Roanoke Sound. The cruise is in protected waters — not in the ocean.

What time should I arrive for my cruise?
At least 20 minutes prior to departure.

How many people can the Downeast Rover accommodate?
25 including children. We require a total of 10 in total on open cruises to take the Rover out.

What are the rules about life jackets for children?
According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s Office of Boating Safety, an infant should not travel on a boat until they weigh at least 18 pounds and can wear a snug-fitting personal flotation device (PFD). Most babies will reach that weight when they are between 4 and 11 months old. For all infants and children weighing less than 30 lbs. it is the responsibility of the parent to bring with them a PFD that properly fits their child.

Can I bring my own food/drinks/alcohol?
But of course! We encourage guests to bring food, drinks, coolers, etc.

Do you have food/drinks available for purchase on board?
Unfortunately, food and drink are not available at this time. Please, however, feel free to BYOB or visit one (or more) of our local vendors.

Can I bring my baby/dog?
We can accommodate children and infants although children/infants are not recommended on our sunset sails. Unfortunately, we can not allow dogs except on private cruises. Please call if planning to bring your pup on a private sail for special instructions.

What should I wear?
We recommend checking the Manteo weather forecast before dressing for your cruise, but in general, we encourage guests to dress in layers. High heels — on a boat — are not very practical and are therefore discouraged.

Do you provide life jackets?
Yes for adults and children. People with infants weighing less than 30 must bring a PDF appropriate for that child.

Where can I park?
There is ample free parking along the street in downtown Manteo. Free parking is also available in the waterfront lot at the end of Budleigh Street and across the bridge in Festival Park.

Why might my sail be canceled?
The most common reason a sail is canceled is due to poor weather conditions that would make sailing dangerous. We never enjoy canceling a sail, but if we must, we will call to inform our guests. We also encourage guests to call ahead of the day of their sail to confirm their reservation and verify conditions.

What happens should it start raining during my sail?
Guests are welcome inside the Rover’s galley at any time – rain or shine.

Can I propose marriage to my sweetie while on board?
Yes! We’ve had several couples become engaged during a romantic Rover cruise. If you inform the captain of your plans, he can find you a quiet, isolated spot on the boat. Don’t forget the champagne!

Do you have a bathroom on board?
We do – complete with toilet paper and soap! Public restrooms are centrally located in the downtown waterfront pavilion.

Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes Please call Kim at 252-473-4866 for information.

There are several other Outer Banks sailing companies in the area, why should I sail the Rover?
For over 20 years, the Rover has been an iconic fixture of the Outer Banks. Our trips are not guided tours. We offer relaxing sails in Roanoke Sound complete with blazing sunsets, amazing dolphin sightings, and unparalleled views of the Jockey’s Ridge sand dunes. Our crew works hard to make sure you and your guest feel like family, and we encourage all of our visitors to sit back relax and absorb all the beauty that surrounds you!
